Chapter Eight

Nessa—the woman with the brown hair and nothing but side-eye for Ariella—placed her hand on Caine’s arm, a gesture of ownership that Ariella could clearly read.

She didn’t want any drama, and she also didn’t really want to be the cause of Caine being thrown into the doghouse. Sure, it wasn’t exactly comfortable hanging out with her ex and his new girlfriend, but Ariella was mature enough to not want to be the cause of any trouble.

Personally, especially considering how full she was from the feast, she’d prefer if she could just sneak back to her room and sleep off all the food, but she’d promised Darlena she’d attend, and that meant more than just dinner. She had to watch up to the lighting of the bonfire, and then she could sneak away.

Considering the fact that Jianna and Merlin had stopped by their table, it seemed like they were watching who was and wasn’t there—and Ariella was still willing to help Darlena impress her boss.

It doesn’t hurt to do favors for people. Be nice—that sort of thing. Besides, remember, you’re here for free. Stand in the crowd, smile, clap. That’s not too hard to do.

But hanging around her ex added a difficult element that she’d not known she was bargaining for. Why couldn’t they have already been seated when she walked up? Then she could have enjoyed that delicious food with a table full of strangers instead of in this status of weird familiarity-slash-strangeness with a man she’d once dreamed she’d spend the rest of her life with.

And his new girlfriend.

Oswy and Maeve stopped, watching a group weaving ribbons around a maypole—one of many posted throughout the grounds—before turning to look back for the rest of them. Ariella stopped just a few steps behind, and she followed their gaze to watch Caine and Nessa exchanging heated words until Nessa stomped away, making it to Maeve and Oswy.

“Come on,” she nearly growled, and the trio walked off.

Ariella could have followed them, but Caine hadn’t moved, and she felt like the situation was her fault, so she approached him. “Are you okay?”

Caine shrugged.

“They left you behind.” A statement, though she didn’t exactly know what kind of response she was expecting. “Don’t you want to catch up with them?”

“No.”

“I saw the way she looked at me. Is she mad that your ex is here? I’m sorry, I should have said no when Maeve asked me to join—”

Caine cut her off. “She’s not my girlfriend.”

“Well, whatever, your vacation fling. It would still make sense she’d be weirded out by your ex having dinner with you. Did she want you to ditch me? If so, I’m fine with it. I wasn’t planning on staying very long anyway.” Ariella wrung her hands as people walked around them, heading from the dinner tent to find a place along the procession trail.

“I’m not involved with her in any way, Ari. She’s Oswy’s girl. They’re a trio. Nessa has no interest in me. She’s just messing with me—with us.”

The statement caught her off-guard, but her defensive humor allowed her to answer.
